What is Bio Dethatcher?
Bio Dethatcher is a treatment used for the control and breakdown of thatch. The product is 100% natural and contains microbes, bacteria and enzymes effective in reducing thatch. Treatments are a safer alternative than mechanical dethatching.

What is Thatch?
Thatch is an accumulation of dead and living plant parts located at the soil surface, just below the grass. The build up of thatch restricts the normal penetration of moisture and nutrients into the soil, trapping this moisture at the surface like a sponge. Thatch layers make a desirable home for many insects and disease causing fungi. It is also responsible for poor drought tolerance of turf |
What’s in Bio Dethatcher?
Bio Dethatcher is a water-soluble blend of natural soil microbes, bacteria and enzymes. Some of the ingredients are: maltodextrin, dextrose, yeast extracts and chlorine chloride.
How Does it Work?
Bio Dethatcher comes in a dry formulation and when mixed with water activates the dormant microbes. The liquid mix is then applied to the surface of the lawn where these new microbes immediately go to work feeding on the thatch. Other ingredients help to stimulate and multiply the microbes currently in the soil and thatch, putting them to work as well. These microbes help turn thatch into rich humus, which is beneficial for growing turf grass.
The Problems with Mechanical Dethatching
A common practice for removing unwanted thatch has been to physically tear it out with vertical mowers or power dethatchers. These machines were very popular years ago, but research has found that they do more harm than good. Power dethatchers have vertical blades designed to rip the thatch out through the grass. The problem with this process is that the machines also tear out live roots, rhizomes and healthy grass plants. The end result is a weak, thin turf with dead spots that need reseeding. Research has also found that power dethatching does not address the reason the thatch accumulates in the first place. Thatch accumulates from being produced faster than the soil microbes can break it down.
The safest and most effective way to reduce thatch and limit its redevelopment is through biological controls, frequent core aeration, and topdressing. |
