Grub Guard

Left unprotected, your turf could suffer severe damage from grubs!

What are grubs?
Grubs are the most destructive lawn insects in Illinois, with populations increasing every year. Grubs are the larvae of several species of Scarab beetles. Common species are: Japanese (pictured on the left), May, June, Ataenius and Masked Chafer beetles. Grubs live hidden in the soil, where they feed on the root systems of the grass, often killing large sections of the lawn.

Most Scarab beetles emerge from the soil during the months of May-June. These beetles feed on trees, shrubs and flowers during the summer months. In June and July, they begin their search for suitable locations for egg laying. Beetles can fly for miles in search of such locations. Their favorite locations are lush, well-watered lawns, as moist soils are ideal to tunnel in. Each female beetle lays up to 60 eggs. Eggs generally hatch in 2-3 weeks and the newborn grubs begin to feed on the lawn’s root system.

Lawn injury is first noticed by a gradual yellowing, browning and wilting, despite adequate irrigation. Later stages appear as irregular brown, dead patches. Grubs feed on the roots, allowing the turf to be pulled up or rolled back easily. Skunks, raccoons, moles, foxes and birds will often tear up the turf to feed on grubs, creating even more damage than the grubs would have caused alone

Protect your turf! Have us apply Grub Guard!
Grub preventatives, like Grub Guard, are becoming the most accepted means of controlling grubs. Preventative products are much safer and provide longer control than standard insecticides. Grub Guard works best when it is applied between June and July, allowing for season-long control. Other insecticides (for controlling grubs in their later stages) only last about 2 weeks. These insecticides are also more toxic, killing beneficial insects, like earthworms, lady bugs and ants.

Ways to prevent grub injury

Have us apply Grub Guard to your lawn, providing season-long protection.

Have us treat your trees and shrubs when beetles are present.

Do not use beetle pheromone traps, as they will attract beetles to your property ,increasing the chance of injury to your lawn, trees and shrubs.

Encourage a deep, dense root system by core aerating, fertilizing, mowing at 3” or higher, and watering deeply and infrequently.

Keep thatch levels to a minimum with core aeration and Bio Dethatcher applications.
